Romania has some of the most extensive agricultural lands and areas with high natural value (HNVF – high nature value farmland). These lands cover 30% of Romania’s agricultural land, totaling 5 million hectares, and their biodiversity is rare in other countries. High nature value farmland is located in Transylvania, Maramureș, the hills of the Carpathians, where agriculture is the main traditional economic activity and a key factor in nature conservation.
These lands are characterized by the presence of natural and semi-natural vegetation (pastures, meadows) rich in various plant types. They are integrated into an extensive and uninterrupted mosaic landscape, which includes natural elements (such as field edges, hedgerows, wooded stone areas, or shrubs, rivers), cultivated lands, and traditional orchards. Traditional agricultural practices have contributed to maintaining these areas, providing numerous public benefits, such as landscapes, clean air, water, high-quality food products, quality of life, opportunities for recreational activities, carbon storage, or flood control.
The entire society benefits from these aspects, not just local communities. Therefore, HNV areas deserve support not only for conserving natural diversity but also for ensuring ecological balance. Adaptation to climate change is crucial for agricultural productivity, economic livelihoods for many agricultural communities, and, of course, obtaining healthy and nutritious food.
